Fast Facts: Gunston had an engineering degree before he got his medical degree...He used both disciplines to develop the first artificial human knee in 1968...He refused to patent the idea because he wanted it to be as widely available as possible...He went on to develop other joint replacements...In 1989, he received the $100,000 Manning Principal Award as one of Canada's top innovators.

Where would we be today if it was`nt for his invention. A lot of people would be crippled and in wheel chairs.

I have had two knee replacements and I am grateful for this medical invention. Thanks Dr. Gunston.

I was fortunate to spend some early years of my life in Flin Flon as a neighbour to Frank Gunston. We were buddies, started school together and played on the Jubilee playground. I can vouch that in spite of his outstanding accomplishments, he is a genuine person. My wife now has a replaced Knee and we often Thank Dr Gunston. He is too humble and should be recognized and lauded for this great contribution to medicine.

No, not a great anything. A truly great doctor would show people how to prevent their knees from degenerating to the point where they are completely non-functioning. It's doable.
